A grid forming inverter or GFM inverter is a type of inverter that generates and regulates the magnitude of voltage, frequency, and phase of a grid or microgrid by actively controlling the voltage rather than having an already existing reference from the grid. Unlike grid following inverters, where the synchronization happens in relation to the voltage and frequency of the grid, GFM inverters generate a stabilized voltage waveform and work independently without the requirement of an established grid. GFM inverters emulate the performance of conventional synchronous generators.
