Wood batteries refer to a new range of battery technologies in which wood-based components such as lignin, cellulose, nanocellulose, and biomass-derived carbon play the roles of electrodes, separators, electrolytes, or structural elements rather than simply being considered raw materials for battery production. The commercial idea lies in making use of side streams from the pulp industry to produce battery materials, including lignin-based hard carbon used for lithium and sodium-ion batteries. In 2025, Stora Enso and Altris demonstrated 20 Ah, 3 V sodium-ion cells produced with the help of industrial equipment and lignin extracted from Nordic wood.

Wood-based batteries are progressing beyond laboratory experiments. Lignin-based hard carbon and solid electrolytes based on nanocellulose are currently being developed at the research stage. The market continues to be technology-driven, with commercialization becoming more reliant on the ability to transform the benefits of using renewable materials into reliable cell performance and manufacturing.

Converting Battery Raw Material Constraints into Locally Sourced Bio-based Inputs

Battery manufacturers are increasingly examining wood-derived materials as a means of reducing dependence on conventional carbon and mineral-based inputs while strengthening regional supply chains. In 2025, Stora Enso participated in the EU-funded ATENA+ program, which is a 12-partner consortium aiming to develop a European sodium-ion battery cell, supplying the Lignode® anode material made from lignin, a polymer found in wood. Apart from the obvious benefits of sustainability, lignin is a by-product of the pulp industry, meaning that the battery material can leverage an existing supply chain in the forestry industry. Furthermore, research in 2025 continued to explore ways to turn lignin into hard carbon for sodium-ion batteries. As such, the sourcing of local feedstock is becoming an important differentiator for technology development and electrochemical performance.

Wood-based Batteries Market- Geographical Insights

The European region has created one of the significant institutional and industrial ecosystems for battery materials from wood due to the overlap of forestry feedstocks, localization of batteries, and technology collaboration initiatives. Starting in January 2025, the ATENA+ consortium brought together 12 members, among which Stora Enso offered its Lignode® wood-based anode material for sodium-ion batteries. The regional ecosystem was also progressing towards physical cell demonstration: in June 2025, Stora Enso and sodium-ion company Altris from Sweden demonstrated industrial-scale equipment production of 20 Ah, 3 V prototype cells utilizing locally sourced Nordic lignin. Another research route was opened in Germany through the ThüNaBsE project, where Fraunhofer IKTS and its partners were developing a lignin-based sodium-ion battery from feedstocks to a 1 Ah full cell. Europe thus stands out for its connection between side streams from forestry and battery material development and cell demonstrations.

The importance of Asia-Pacific is greater in materials science and the entire sodium-ion battery ecosystem, including China and Japan. In 2025, scientists at Zhejiang University of Technology conducted research into the molecular cross-linking of lignin precursors to control the pore structure and defects of hard carbon used in sodium-ion batteries by studying the electrochemical properties required to turn the wood-based carbon into a usable cell component. In addition, the Tokyo University of Science, Japan, conducted research in 2025 on lignin as a highly productive precursor of hard-carbon anodes in sodium-ion batteries. The industrial infrastructure in China, where the production of sodium-ion batteries is rapidly developing, serves as a possible area for the application of innovative bio-based anodes. Thus, the importance of the region is defined by the combination of both battery-manufacturing capabilities and intensive research into materials.
